Duke University | Chiller Plant 3
Given growing energy demands, a project to expand one of Duke University’s two existing chiller plants evolved into construction of a third plant to provide high-efficiency, low-carbon energy. The resulting 36,223-SF, two-story Chiller Plant 3 adds capacity to deliver 7,600 tons of chilled water to help air condition various academic and medical buildings on campus. Future expansion will enable the plant to double that amount. Despite a variety of changes to the project during construction, the plant’s inaugural start-up occurred about two weeks ahead of schedule. With the plant now successfully completed, LeChase is building an adjacent thermal storage tank. It will allow the University to produce extra chilled water during off-peak hours and store 4.4 million gallons for use during peak times of the day.
