The Charlotte offices of LeChase and Jacobs Engineering teamed up on July 24 to sponsor a weekly outing for Project Scientist.

Each summer, Project Scientist serves more than 2,000 girls in various summer day camps around the country. It offers learning experiences in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) to expose a diverse population of girls to STEM curriculum, role models and careers. The Charlotte camp meets at the Johnson & Wales University campus. This summer, it has 61 elementary and middle school-aged campers.
To reinforce STEM learning and tying into the camp’s Robotic and Artificial Intelligence week, LeChase focused its segment on engineering backgrounds involved in school construction and how robotics plays a role in product fabrication and some installations. Topics covered geotechnical, architectural, civil and structural engineering; MEP (mechanical, electrical and plumbing), interior design, landscaping and BIM (building information modeling). The team reviewed different types of dirt and had the girls build reinforcing mats for structural footings out of craft sticks. To keep the girls engaged even after the outing, they gave each camper one of five different robots to assemble at home.
