The Duke Alumni Hall project team held a “pull planning session” in the Durham office on June 5. This meeting brought together all subcontractors and trades currently working on the project to make a baseline schedule for the rest of the major milestones.
In pull planning, a goal is set for substantial completion, and everyone works backwards from that date. Subcontactors take responsibility for their various milestones and they schedule tasks, including durations and crew sizes, by writing them down on sticky notes and putting them in their correct spot on the board.
Involving the subs in developing the schedule is a good way to get their buy-in, versus LeChase making a schedule and expecting everyone to stick to it. It also helps identify potential scheduling conflicts and issues that can then be handled proactively, avoiding delays.
